Visionary Arts
Your portal to visionary and alternative arts, whether painting, music, film or other. Check back for constantly updated resources! What are visionary arts? There is no precise definition, but I include any work of art that is intended to transform the viewer, listener or audience or show them the world or some aspect of it in a new way. Some examples of this are sacred geometry, films that utilize sound and light to alter brain chemistry, art forms -including music, painting and dance- based on mythic or shamanic traditions, and art that is highly experimental in its subject matter or medium. Visionary art is not necessarily better or worse than traditional art, but it usually has a different purpose -though traditional art can also be visionary, of course. However, I think when we speak of visionary art, we usually mean something that is looking towards the future, even if it utilizes elements of the present and past. A visionary is someone with a vision, usually of the future. These are necessarily only guidelines, as the arts by their very nature tend to be difficult to pin down and categorize. Another, more subjective way to define visionary art is simply art that inspires, teaches or elevates.
